The Sweet Solution to Sugar
No sugar is ideal
Ideally, we wouldn’t add sugar or any sweetener to anything. We would feel better and be healthier if we didn’t. But that’s not realistic for most of us. We like a little sweetness in our tea, coffee, or rare baked good.
Approved in the US
A new non-sugar sweetener has been approved in the US in the last few years. It is not yet approved in Canada, so it can’t be purchased in Canada. It is available online for delivery to Canada for personal use. This zero-calorie sweetener is called Allulose.
Tastes like sugar
The big advantage of allulose is its taste. It tastes incredibly similar to sugar. Most people can’t distinguish allulose from table sugar. It has no artificial sweetener aftertaste. That makes it an option for those who can’t take the aftertaste of many artificial sweeteners.
Bakes like sugar
One of the big weaknesses of zero-calorie sweeteners is they don’t work well in cooking. Allulose is different. It can be used in cooking. It caramelizes like sugar.
Mirror sugar
Allulose is very similar to the natural fruit sugar fructose. It is actually a mirror-image molecule. Our body is tuned for only ‘right-handed’ sugars, so it doesn’t recognize the mirror image, ‘left-handed’ sugars. These pass right through the gut. Allulose is a ‘left-handed’ mirror sugar.
From fruit
It occurs naturally in small quantities in wheat, figs, and a few other foods. It is manufactured by transforming fruit sugar into its mirror image.
No blood sugar rise
Allulose also doesn’t raise blood sugar, which is important, especially for diabetics.
Downsides
The downside is it is expensive---pricier than even stevia. Also, in Canada, it has to be purchased from the US and shipped. Also, like most zero-calorie sweeteners, it can make you a bit bloated, mainly if used in large amounts.
Sweet option
If you are desperate for a zero-calorie sweetener that avoids the bitterness of some artificial sweeteners, allulose might be a sweet option for you.
