Bismuth is a metal that can be combined with other compounds to make an effective antacid. Bismuth compounds have been used for over 200 years to relieve stomach upsets.

Drink Pink

Today, and for the last 120 years, the most common form of Bismuth has been the pink liquid you reach for when you have an upset stomach. It is also available as a tablet today.

Side Effects

The pink stuff can turn your tongue black and also darken the stools. This is harmless, as the pink stuff is a short-term treatment and can’t be used long-term. Long-term use can cause dizziness and ringing in the ears. This is due to getting too much Bismuth. Also, if you take blood thinners, the pink liquid can interact with it, so check with your doctor.

Protect and Retain

Bismuth protects the stomach from excess acid and reduces the acid level in the stomach. It also helps retain fluid, especially electrolytes, which can be important with diarrhea. It may even help kill off the germs that cause diarrhea.

Ulcer Killer

Bismuth also kills off the bacteria that cause ulcers, the H pylori bacteria. It is often taken together with an antibiotic to cure an ulcer.

Old Timer

The pink stuff has been working for over 100 years, and it still works today. When you have a bit of stomach upset, think pink!
