He became the US president during the worst depression in history—a quarter of households were unemployed, banks were failing. He put 5 million to work on public projects and conservation projects, restoring confidence. He introduced government pensions for seniors. He mobilized the industrial might of the US to defeat tyranny in World War II. He was instrumental in saving democracy from tyranny and economic collapse. He did this while he was paralyzed from a bout with polio. FDR also founded the March of Dimes, which eventually led to the Polio vaccine.
